The pursuit of (Maximum) Happiness

I must have too much time on my hands lately (only .. NOT!! {think Borat} ), my mind seems to be wandering all over the place. My latest result of my mind roulette is my "maximum happiness" theory??..  A long time ago I talked to my "economist" friend who tried to convince me that every human action can be explained economically. I don't really believe in that or rather I tried not too believe in that because the thought of people acting out purely because of "economic value" (or on a more simplistic view , although not totally equivalent "money value") is kind of lame and not really "romantic"(for lack of a better word)...

My thinking is maybe it's not purely the economic value we are trying to optimize for, but the "happiness" value... (to me that is less lame, I guess)..

To elaborate,  maybe the goal of every human on earth is simply to maximize their happiness. Well duh!, hardly a breakthrough, right?.. haha..Anyways, the implication of this is maybe you should spend more time thinking about how to "invest" your time in order to get maximum happiness in the same way that you would invest money. Sometimes you should invest in short term easy happiness (like partying, watching TV,eating nice things etc.. ) that just comes and goes but is a sure thing, sometimes you have to invest on the more "profound" type of happiness which you could expect "interest" out of the good long lasting "memories" (like a good friendship ). or sometime you have to invest long term for future happiness that's more long lasting (like studying hard --> good job).. but the ultimate goal is to optimize the happiness throughout your life (think happiness graph & optimizing the area of the graph.. I'm such a nerd)..  So, stop wasting time people and maximize your happiness today!!.. call 1888-MAX-HAPPY for free consultancy

Disclaimer: The number is not real, as far as I know..
P.S. I like Borat haha and I'm laughing at my own jokes right now
P.S.2. Yes, I'm Odd! no doubt about it.

Stuck in a moment (you can't get out of)

If I have to describe my music listening years, this year would probably be the year I really "get" into U2.. I never really paid attention to their songs before, despite of them being highly regarded by many...  This song and the lyric of the song in particular speaks very loudly to me and is probably one of my all-time favorites..  Hope it speaks to you ,too.. (click on the title to listen)

Stuck in a moment by U2

I'm not afraid of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard
I'm just trying to find a decent melody
A song that I can sing in my own company

I never thought you were a fool
But darling, look at you
You gotta stand up straight
Carry your own weight
These tears are going nowhere, baby

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And now you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better

Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

I will not forsake the colours that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks, they left you with nothing
I am still enchanted by the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears, through your eyes I can see

And you are such a fool
To worry like you do

I know it's tough
And you can never get enough
Of what you don't really need now, my, oh my

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm till you discover how deep
I wasn't jumping, for me it was a fall
It's a long way down to nothing at all

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it

And if, and if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if your way should falter
Along this stony pass
It's just a moment
This time will pass

ETA: I've just got to watch the mv of this song for the first time after writing this blog. I like it a lot ! Basically, it's a video of Bono (the lead signer) falling of a van over and over -- someone experiencing a bad thing and keep re-living that moment (stuck in the moment).. His band mate trying to help him but there were fast traffic in their way -- when you get stuck you tend to "drive" people away (sorry the pun).. Finally his friend breaks through and pull him out..

Donuts, Architects, Aerosmith's soul, a Cingular salesperson and a Gas barbecue grill ..

Question:
What do donuts, architects, Aerosmith's soul, a Cingular salesperson and a gas barbecue grill  have in common ?

Answer:
A hole !! Let me explain:

  • Donuts: This is too obvious, if you don't understand this just skip the whole blog entry.
  • Architects: Pretty un-obvious, but for people who have a friend in Chula's architectural department, ask them.. or if you don't, be-friend some & then ask them ( they are generally cool people, believe me !)
(Oh sa-ta-pud, oh-sa-ta-pud, oh-sa-ta-pud mee ruu trong klang)..
  • Aerosmith's soul: If you haven't heard the song "Hole in my soul" by Aerosmith or still didn't get it from reading the title of the song see >>link to lyric<<
  • Cingular sales person: Last week I "bought" a new cell phone (sony-ericsson -w810i, woohoo!)  from amazon for "- $175", I got the phone, put the sim card in, followed the "amazon" instruction but the sim didnt work (it says "inactive smartchip") so I decided to go down to a Cingualr shop ("now the new AT&T") trying to ask a sales person to activate the sim for me... I don't remember the exact words but the gist of his reply was that " Oh, this is what you get from buying a *cheap** cell phone from amazon.. we can't access amazon's account, so, you just have to take it with amazon.."  (He must have said the word cheap to me at least 3 times, I don't remember how) Anyways, after fumbling with it for a while (a week) and even receiving a useless new sim from amazon, I just figured out that all I had to do was call Cingular/AT&T to activate my new account... hmm... couldn't the sales person just tell me that.. What an "a-hole" ..    (oh , btw, amazon's customer reps are pretty nice.. although not quite knowledgable..but nice)
  • Gas grill: The story behind this is yesterday we had a July 4th (korean) BBQ party at our house. We've got this grill from someone else that hasn't been used in a while; in the morning of the 4th I tried to light up the grill by myself and for some unknown reason it didnt seem to work.. So, I make a keen observation that there's a "hole" between the valve (where the gas comes from) and the grill.. .. How can the grill possibly work with this hole, the gas would leak out and wild fire would spread... ...  If you are not sure what the hole looks like, see below pic :

http://media.popularmechanics.com/images/16-28.jpg

(hole = square shaped, silver thing = tube that connects the gas to the grill)..
Anyways, I was really successful in convincing everyone around here that the grill's not working and it's missing a part.. (to shut the hole).. So successful that we've asked someone to bring a new grill to our place ..  So we've waited and waited for the new grill to arrive, but what do you know the new grill has the "hole" also.. hmm... after some experimentations we made a shocking discovery that the grill can work "despite" the hole.. as a matter of fact after some research on *Yahoo Search* I found out that the tube with the hole is called a "venturi tube" and "The venturi tubes connect the control valve to the burner(s) and mix the fuel with air to provide flame"... ..  .. . . ok.. we learn new things everyday ..  Apparently, we're not the only one who doesnt know this check this >>link<< out

Ok, so that concludes my "whole" story hope y'all have a very "holly" 4th of July.. peace
